Description
This is an autographed signed letter by Victorian author Christina Rossetti (English, 1830-1894). Rossetti was a writer of romantic, devotional and children's poems, including "Goblin Market" and "Remember". She also wrote the words of two Christmas carols well known in Britain: "In the Bleak Midwinter", later set by Gustav Holst, Katherine Kennicott Davis, and Harold Darke, and "Love Came Down at Christmas", also set by Darke and other composers. She was a sister of the artist and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti and features in several of his paintings. She also pushed the boundaries of accepted Victorian society with many examples of her feminist beliefs evident in her writings. This letter speaks of Sappho, the Greek poet who also pushed against the male dominated society she encountered in ancient Greece. The letter is dated for October 24th, but the year is not noted.
