Grover & Frances Cleveland Signed Slip 1 Day After Leaving White House After 1st Term
A small sheet signed by both President Grover Cleveland and his wife, Frances F. Cleveland, one day after Cleveland's first term in office. 1p, measuring 7" x 3.25", n.p., dated March 5, 1889. Signed "Grover Cleveland March 5, 1889" and "Frances F. Cleveland." Very fine with a flattened center fold and faint foxing. Boldly signed by both.
Frances Cleveland (1864-1947) married President Grover Cleveland during his first term; he was 49 and she was 21, making her the youngest wife of a sitting president. As a bright and attractive young woman, she immediately gained the attention of the press and the public. Upon leaving the White House on March 4, 1889, Frances told a staff member, "Now, Jerry, I want you to take good care of all the furniture and ornaments in the house, for I want to find everything just as it is now, when we come back again." In the meantime, the Clevelands moved to New York City, where Grover Cleveland took a position with the law firm of Bangs, Stetson, Tracy, and MacVeigh. The Clevelands would indeed return to the White House, moving back in exactly four years later on March 4, 1893, for Grover's second term as president.
