Item Details
Description
Ancient Near East, modern day Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey, Urartian culture, Iron Age III, ca. 7th century BCE. A hammered bronze panel decorated in stippled and etched motifs. This piece may have functioned as an applique to sew to a leather quiver case or belt strap as the periphery has perforations along 3 edges. Interestingly one edge is serrated and both faces contain different motifs, so it is possible this piece was meant to be viewed from both sides. One face has a pair or abstract figures perhaps zoomorphic with paw like limbs, and the other side has an archer surrounded by repeating geometric patterns. Size: 4" L x 3.65" W (10.2 cm x 9.3 cm)

Bronze belts bearing repeated motifs of gods, hunting scenes, animals, and geometric and floral patterns are one of the most enduring remains of the Urartian Kingdom, which stretched from the Euphrates in the west to Iran in the East. The Urartu had such skill with bronze work that the Assyrians would take their finished metal objects whenever they could, through trade, warfare, or plunder. For example, Assyrian king Sargon II listed 305,000 bronze daggers as the plunder from a successful campaign in Urartu. The unmistakable artistry of this piece reminds us why Sargon II stole them!
