Description
**First Time At Auction**
Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran and Southeastern Turkey, Luristan culture, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. A large cast bronze signet ring with stylized animals etched into the face forming an intaglio seal. The forms are simplistic and abstract - linear horned ungulate creatures and possibly a serpent. The broad band tapers inward along the shank, and the size suggests a man of importance wore this ring. We recommend rolling the ring is soft putty to view the seal image more clearly! Size: 1.3" Diameter x 1.19" W (3.3 cm x 3 cm); band opening: 0.99" L (2.5 cm)
For a similar example of this type, please see the Metropolitan Museum of Art's website, accession number: 43.102.14.
Provenance: private Middletown, New York, USA collection; ex-Bonhams Knightsbridge, London, May 16, 2002, part of lot 321; ex-private Professor Muller collection, Germany, 1973
