Reverse Painting on Glass with "Gen. Wasschington" (sic) Spelling Error Pennsylvania-German School Folk Art Style
c. 1820, General George Washington Portrait Reverse Painting on Glass, Shown Wearing His "Society of Cincinnatus" Eagle Design Medal, with "Gen. Wasschington" Spelling Error, Framed, Choice Extremely Fine.
A colorful Hand-Painted Reverse Painting on Glass, measuring 9.75" x 7.25" of a half-length Portrait of General George Washington in his full Revolutionary War Era military uniform, and wearing his Society of Cincinnatus Medal with its "Eagle" design. His uniform consisting of a bold blue tunic with a vivid red collar and lapels, seated in a chair, having his famous sword tucked under his right arm. This painting also has some brilliant, glittering gilt highlights to Washington's shoulder epilets. It is still housed in its original, period wooden frame.
Based on other examples encountered, this painting is thought to be of the Pennsylvania Dutch-German School. This Portrait of George Washington is unsigned and undated, the subject being wonderfully identified below as, "Gen. Wasschington" spelling error. The spelling of Washington's name suggests this painting was created in that heavily German community. Overall, truly pleasing with some typical minor scattered pigment loss on his right arm and lapel, which does not detract much from the excellent eye appeal. A Patriotic display in an early American home of America's first President as he would have appeared during the Revolutionary War. A wonderful early "folk art" style piece.
