Lot of Five Complete issues of the Alexandria Daily Gazette, Commercial & Political Newspaper, include: July 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, and 20th, 1812. Each newspaper has 4 pages, measures 11.75" x 19.25" currently bound together. Each issue displays a very early use of the woodblock engraved 1.5" round image of George Washington in the masthead, illustrated only 12 years after his death. Mount Vernon is only a dozen miles south of Alexandria, Virginia so George Washington would often frequent the town. Each issue also has Slavery related advertisements, some from notables.
Edmund I. Lee (The Lee's of Virginia) list a $50 Reward for a Runaway "Negro Man Slave named Ben." John Dundas (former mayor of Alexandria) offers a $20 Reward for "a Negro Woman named Betty." Another ad reads: "Seven Negroes. A valuable Blacksmith, his Wife and four Children; one a smart active Boy; another a smart Girl capable of service; a Negro Fellow advanced in age but an excellent Cook. Terms 450 dollars cash."
