Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Jaina, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A collection of 3 terracotta full figure molds for creating effigies such as rattles, whistles, ocarinas, and statues. The tallest is a seated lord with an elaborate headdress. The next is a humanoid or monkey deity with a star shaped pendant- howler monkeys were venerated as patrons of the arts and music. The last is a standing lord with another flaring headdress. The molds the Maya used to create their sculptures en masse are rarer than the items they produced! The molds might not only have shaped clay, but also food or other malleable substances like incense or wax! Size: 4.5" L x 3" W x 8.5" H (11.4 cm x 7.6 cm x 21.6 cm)
