Description
Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A striking pottery jar adorned with an applied maskette of a deity boasting openwork eyes and a projecting chin as 6 elevated stripes rise from the top of his head. Beige and red painted squares embellish exterior of the vessel, along with incised decoration of a geometric pattern just below the rim, 2 square glyphs - each with anthropomorphic designs - and a twisted, knot-like motif. The geometric and knot-like embellishments are reminiscent of textiles and highlight the importance of clothing and attire to the Maya, while the glyphs may convey a message regarding the dedication or use of the vessel. A fascinating example! Size: 7.8" Diameter x 10" H (19.8 cm x 25.4 cm)
