Description
East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. A breathtaking sancai glazed tripod vessel, its rounded walls featuring three lion or foo dog maskettes staggered with three dragons - all in low to high relief - the overall bulbous body rising to a short neck and slightly flared rim - all supported upon a trio of zoomorphic feet. Adding to the vessel's aesthetic beauty is the desired sancai glaze technique - gracing the surfaces with glazes of caramel amber, jade green, and creamy white hues - known as three-color or sancai glazes - BUT ALSO with a brilliant deep cerulean blue glaze embellishing the dragons. A marvelous example, replete with a magnificent form, mythical iconography, and stunning sancai glaze. Size: 10.5" W (including feet) x 7.375" H (26.7 cm x 18.7 cm)
A similar example, only decorated with a floral motif rather than mythical beasts and not including blue glaze, sold at Christie's Hong Kong on October 4, 2016 for HK $275,000 or US $35,600.
