Fabric swatch, taken from Admiral C.H. Eldredge's black crepe which he wore when he was a Guard of Honor as Lincoln lay in state in New York. The swatch measures 1.125" x .1", and is encapsulated by CAG to a size of 2.375'' x 3.375''.
After President Lincoln's funeral train arrived in New York on Tuesday, April 25, 1865, his coffin lay in state in City Hall for twelve hours. Over 150,000 people gained entrance which was less than half of the crowd that had waited outside to catch a glimpse of the President. Admiral C.H. Eldredge, who was Lincoln's Guard of Honor from 2 pm - 4 pm wore a long strip of black crepe, a swatch of which is included in this lot.
