General Orders Announcing Lincoln's Funeral Obsequies in New York
1p, measuring 5.25" x 8.25", New York Naval Yard, dated April 24, 1865. A General Order written by H. Paulding, Commandant. The document announces the details for President Abraham Lincoln's funeral, reading in full: "All the Officers on this station who can be spared from duty, will report to the Marshal of the day, at the City Hall, New York, on Tuesday, the 25th inst., at 12 o'clock, to join in the obsequies of our late President, ABRAHAM LINCOLN." With docketing on verso, reading: "Order to attend the obsequies of President Lincoln." The sheet has flattened folds and light edge toning. Very fine overall.
After lying in state at the White House and Capitol, Abraham Lincoln's body was loaded onto a nine-car funeral train to begin the journey back to Springfield, Illinois. The train stopped at 11 cities and over a million citizens paid their respects. On April 25, the train passed through New York, where the funeral procession numbered 60,000 spectators.
