Description
S. Clemens Partial Letter On Behalf of His Wife "she is habituated to obscurity & prefers to remain in it"
A letter signed "S L Clemens" and addressed to Miss Lanigan [possibly Annette LaNeaugan (Ann Lannigan)]. 1p partial, measuring 4.75" x 3.75", [Tannersville, New York], dated [August 6, 1890]. The upper portion of the letter, including the mention of his wife, has been clipped. The letter has light wear at the corners and edges. Minor mounting residue along the right edge. An attractive and clear signature.
Clemens writes to the young woman, who seemingly inquired about Olivia Clemens for some sort of publication. He thanks her on his wife's behalf, but writes "she is habituated to obscurity & prefers to remain in it. Privately I believe she thinks that to be merely proprietor of a cannon cannot warrant one in letting on to be part of the battery." Included with the letter is a photocopy of the original, uncut letter.
Olivia Langdon Clemens (1845-1904) was the wife of the American author Samuel L. Clemens, better known as Mark Twain. The couple met in December 1867 and were married in February 1870. When Samuel was forced to declare bankruptcy in 1894 due to poor investments, Olivia was given "preferred creditor status" at the bank and all of her husband's copyrights were assigned to her. She also helped edit her husband's books, lectures, and articles - something she continued to do up until a few weeks before her death.
