Autograph Letter Signed, “JA Early”, 2pp on one sheet, 5.875" x 9", Lynchburg, May 2, 1887. Cream colored, blue lined stationery is blind embossed at top left. Early writes to Reverend James Powell Smith, in full, “Your letter has not been answered sooner, because I could not give you the names of persons in New Orleans who would take on in the proposed memorial to General [Stonewall] Jackson. I mean their first names. There are a good many of the Louisiana soldiers who served under Genl Jackson who cherish a very high regard for his memory, and among them is the Revd Father Hubert, of New Orleans, a Catholic Priest who was a Chaplain in one of the Louisiana regiments. I will start for New Orleans on Friday (the 6th) and when I get there I will get the names of some persons who will take an active interest in the work you have undertaken and send them to you.”
Jubal A. Early (1816-1894) was a Virginia lawyer and politician who became a Confederate general during the American Civil War. Trained at the United States Military Academy, Early resigned his U.S. Army commission after the Second Seminole War and his Virginia military commission after the Mexican American War, in both cases to practice law and participate in politics. Accepting a Confederate military commission as the American Civil War began, Early fought in the Eastern Theater throughout the conflict. He commanded a division under Generals Stonewall Jackson and Richard Ewell. Early was later promoted to a corps command and in 1864 led a campaign in the Shenandoah Valley that included a raid on Washington, D.C. After the war Early worked as a lawyer and writer. His books and articles on the Civil War helped shape the “Lost Cause” movement in the South.
