Description
This is a trimmed Carte De Visite (CDV) of a soldier who presumably lost his arm in battle. It was trimmed specifically to fit into this uncommon and desirable case. These off-standard size cases are commonly referred to as 'CDV cases,' but there's latitude in the dimensions. This case is approximately 3 3/4 x 2 1/2 inches. The photo, with mat and preserver, is approximately 3 3/8 x 2 1/8 inches.
There's a blue, 2 cent, George Washington, Proprietary tax stamp affixed to the back of the CDV. These were used to support the Union Cause, and were in use for photographs from 1864 - 1866.
By Morgan and Brusstar, Philadelphia.
The consignor, Alex Novak, offered to split the hammer with the Daguerreian Society. This is a generous donation and greatly appreciated.
