Walker Evans (American, 1903–1975) created black-and-white photographs which are defining documents of 20th-century America. Evans pioneered the documentary and street modes of photography, and influenced major figures including Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander, and Bernd and Hilla Becher. Early in his career he successfully exhibited at the NY MoMA, and his work belongs in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among other institutions.
