Description
Tintype of Three Civil War Era Soldiers
Sixth plate, measuring 2.75" x 3.25", ca. 1861-1865, n.p. Photo of three uniformed Civil War soldiers, possibly infantrymen, posing side by side and holding weapons. The men's manner of dress includes a belted, double-breasted coat adorned on both sleeves with their respective chevrons, and matching kepi hats. The tintype process was invented in the 1850s, and included applying photographic emulsion to a thin sheet of iron coated in dark lacquer. This would, in turn, create a direct positive image. The photograph is encased in a decorative gold frame, with small dents around the edges. Minor scratching and surface imperfections present to the image, overall does not affect quality. A nice, clean example.
