A BLACK-LACQUER COMBINED WRITING BOX AND DOCUMENT BOX
Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century
A rectangular ryōshibako or bunko with inset rounded corners and edges and inrōbuta (flush-fitting) lid, fitted with a kakego (inner tray) with recesses for suzuri (ink stone) and suiteki (water dropper), the exterior with carp swimming in a pond, depicted half emerging from the water in the Shijō painting manner, the reverse of the lid and the tray with goldfish, omodaka (arrowhead, Sagittaria trifolia), hosta, and water; the wood substrate covered in glossy black roiro lacquer, decorated in principally in gold and colored hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, and togidashi maki-e, gold and silver foil, and shell against a sparse hirame ground, the silvered copper suiteki in the form of a tortoise; with a wood storage box
