Description
A Japanese Lacquer Suzuri-bako (Writing Box), late 19th-early 20th century in date, is decorated on the exterior with cinnabar red lacquer over black motifs of kimono hanging over a rack and fish bowl painted in black. The interior of the box is decorated with a black lacquer ground and motifs in silver and gold in relief. the interior lid is accented by a motif of silk with noshi and pine and plum branches attached, indicating is was probably a new year's gift. The interior of the box is further enlivened with images of peonies growing near a reed fence. The writing box comes with a tomobako with inscriptions on lid.
