Marquis de Lafayette Framed Portrait as Head of Parisian National Guard
A lithograph portrait of Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette in profile. Captioned as Commander of the Parisian National Guard, with the words "Pro Libertate, Pro Patria" printed above his head. Measuring 5" x 7" (oval, sight), n.p., n.d. Matted and framed to the overall size of 9.75" x 14.25". Minor, negligible soiling. Overall very fine.
The Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834) was lionized following his involvement in the American Revolution. Upon his return to France, he was appointed to the Assembly of Notables in 1787 and was elected a member of the Estates General two years later. During the early days of the French Revolution of 1830, he was proclaimed the rebel leader and appointed the head of the provisional National Guard. Lafayette served in this position for only six months until resigned his post in December 1830.
