Bio: Francis de Erdely was a Hungarian-American artist best known for his figure based paintings done in Los Angeles during the 1940s and 1950s of immigrants, and other ethnic or social outsiders. Trained classically in Europe, his canvases often recall the techniques of the Cubists and the tradition of Cezanne. Living in Europe during both World Wars, de Erdely was greatly impacted by the devastation of both wars. These traumatic experiences later encouraged his interests in depicting the human condition as well as the themes of loss, struggle, and memory. By joining the faculty of the University of Southern California, and later becoming the Dean of the Pasadena Museum School from 1944-1946, de Erdely had a lasting impact on a generation of California artists.
