Bio: A powerful and prominent figure within the New York art world during the second half of the nineteenth century, Daniel Huntington produced over 1,000 works, spanning the genres of history and literary painting, landscape, and portraiture. He was once regarded as a successor to Thomas Cole in landscape and Washington Allen in history painting, but twentieth century art preferences rejected Huntington’s style and pushed him into relative obscurity. He painted many famous people of the nineteenth century, including John Sherman, and Jefferson Davis. Huntington was president of the National Academy of Design from 1862-1870, and again from 1877 -1890, making him the longest term National Academy President.
