William Woods Averell (1832-1900) served as a commander of the 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry during the Civil War, and was present during several major battles including the First Battle of Bull Run, the Union's Peninsular Campaign, and the Battle of Fredericksburg. As a result of his performance and display of leadership, he would later be appointed brevet Major General by President Andrew Johnson in 1865. Following the Civil War, Averell went on to serve as U.S. Consul General under Johnson in the territories of British North American, what is now modern-day Canada, between 1866-1869. After retiring from his career in diplomacy, Averell proved a successful businessman, becoming known for his patent on American Asphalt Pavement in 1879.
