William McKinley. Album Signed, 7.5” x 9.5. Expected wear to cover and edges; gilding on page, interior clean and tight; Very Good. Signatures in excellent condition. 

This fascinating autograph album, was compiled by Representative Daniel Ermentrout who put this autograph album together for his son Fitz. There are 170+ Signatures in the autograph album highlighted by the Future President William McKinley, Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephans, Speaker of the House J. Warren Keifer and many other key names including Civil War Generals, Future Governors, Senators, Diplomats and inventors.

The 47th Congress met in Washington, D.C. from March 4, 1881, to March 4, 1883, during the six months of James Garfield's presidency, and the first year and a half of, Chester Arthur's presidency. The House had a Republican majority while the Senate was evenly divided with 75 senators and 291 members of the House of Representatives. This collection represents a majority of the members of the 47th congress. Prominent individuals in the 47th Congress who's signatures also appear in this volume include Confederate Generals Washington C. Whitthorne, Charles M Shelley, William H. Forney, Robert B. Vance, Jesse J. Finley, George G. Dibrell, John B. Clark, Jr., Alfred M. Scales, William Ruffin Cox, Union hero George W. Hooker, future Secretary of Navy Hilary A. Herbert, Union General & Inventor William S. Rosecrans, 29th Speaker of the House Samuel J. Randall, the man who set up the Gettysburg Address and led the creation of the National Cemetery Andrew G. Curtin, Anson G. McCook, and many untold signatures we have not identified that hold significant value.

William McKinley (January 29, 1843 – September 14, 1901) was the 25th president of the United States, and the last President to serve during the Civil War. McKinley was in office from 1897 until his assassination in 1901. He was best known for being President during the Spanish–American War of 1898, raising protective tariffs to boost American industry, and rejecting the expansionary monetary policy of free silver, keeping the nation on the gold standard.
