W.T. Sherman Convinces Farragut to attend a Reunion

3pp ALS written to Admiral David Farragut, and signed by the legendary Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) as "W.T. Sherman / Lt. Genl" on the top of the third page. Sherman writes trying to convince & seemingly guilt Farragut into attending a grand army reunion in Chicago.

Written in St. Louis. on December 2, 1868. On watermarked cream and blue-lined bifold stationery with “Headquarters Military Division of Missouri” Letterhead. Expected wear includes paper folds, a few small tears, and scattered foxing, else near fine. 5" x 8”.

Dear Admiral,

The young gentleman who was in charge the grand army reunion in Chicago on the 15th & 16th of December, are exceedingly anxious that you should attend with Mrs. Farragut and any of the navy officers you may school to attend you.

I join them most cordially in this wish. You have given all Europe a chance to see & greet you, and you make us folk out here jealous.

We can offer you the view of our fresh water see. (Lake Michigan), and a greeting as hearty as can come to you from Jack Tars from the yard and rations of the best of your frigates.

The railroad trip from New York to Chicago may be made in a palace car and you will see a city the creation of a day that in its looks and comforts rivals the old cities of Europe.

Do come, and let us have the chance to show you the appreciation in which you are held and the intense love we have out here for our naval commanders.
