Rare complete, and well presevered copy with text and atlas. - First edition of the beautifully illustrated report on China and the Philippines by the French sinologist and lexicographer Chrétien-Louis-Joseph de Guignes. De Guignes lived in China for 17 years, partly as a French envoy and consul in Canton. He also worked as an interpreter at the Dutch Embassy in Beijing (1794-1795) under the direction of Titsingh and Van Braam. His impressive travelogue tells of his experiences in China, with illustrations based on sketches he made on the spot. De Guignes' narrative offers an interesting and personal perspective on the embassy in Beijing. - He was the son of the distinguished sinologist Joseph de Guignes and correspondent of the Académie des Sciences and the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. He wrote an important dictionary, the "Dictionnaire Chinois-Français et Latin" (1813). The wide-margined panels show people, genre scenes, architecture, urban and rural life, views of towns and villages, clothing and religion. The maps show Canton, Macao, China, Philippines and Manila. Text volumes with deaccessioned stamps at the beginning. Text volumes rarely minimally browned or spotted, one atlas page in the white margin with minimal lack. Otherwise good copy with strong plates.
