Images measure approx. 21x34 cm (8¼x13½") plus margins. Loose in later leather-backed folder.
Captivating lithographs from the atlas volume of Melling's important account his 18 year residence in Constantinople, where he served as imperial architect to Sultan Selim III and Hatice Sultan. First published in Paris, 1819, with 48 aquatint engravings rather than lithographs. Accompanying the present set of plates is an aquatint on better but a smaller sheet of paper, of La Place de Top Khane, apparently from the earlier publication. The lithographed plates include views of the interior of the Sultan's harem; the Dardanelles; Kara Aghatch; the court of Serail; Fontaine de Sari-Yeri; etc.
Condition
Some foxing to plates, severe to a few, about 10 with fairly light dampstains, some edge wear; good to very good overall.
