Notes:
Manton Judah Nickerson, born deaf at Clarks Harbour, Nova Scotia, went to the Halifax Institution for the Deaf and Dumb from 1884 to 1891. While at school, he began teaching himself to paint the seascapes and ships around him. He worked as a house painter and later pursued maritime painting full time. Many of his works are exhibited in the Archelaus Smith Museum, Cape Sable Island, Centerville, Nova Scotia.
