Description
Two Civil War 3rd Corps Badges, Brass and Enamel
Two diamond-shaped Civil War period brass corps badges, one for the 2nd Division and one for the 3rd Division of the 3rd Corps, both measuring 1.5" x 1.875", ca. 1862-1865. The 2nd Division badge has a white enamel center while the 3rd Division has a blue enamel center. Both with a period T-bar pin on reverse. From the J. Duncan Campbell Collection. Housed in an archival case. Expected wear, age-toning, and soiling to both, very fine overall.
The III Corps was organized in March 1862 and split into three divisions, commanded by Generals Joseph Hooker, Charles S. Hamilton, and Fitz John Porter. It saw heavy action during the Peninsula Campaign, the Seven Days Battles, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville, before fighting at the Battle of Gettysburg. The corps played a key role on the second day of the battle when it was assigned to defend Cemetery Ridge and the Peach Orchard. The unit was nearly decimated by Confederates when General Daniel Sickles chose to disobey orders and moved out of position. A total of 4,210 casualties were the result. Sickles himself was seriously wounded and was succeeded by Major General David B. Birney.
