**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Chimu culture, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A colorful slit-tapestry textile panel formed from tightly-woven camelid (llama or alpaca) fibers in hues of pink, red, goldenrod, and beige. Coursing across the body are 3 horizontal registers filled with abstract, left-facing birds on a red ground, each with a slender body and a raised head with a curved beak. Bars of interlocking S-shaped patterns separate each avian band, and the exterior is lined with either columnar steps or uniform tassels. Size (textile): 18.2" L x 12.875" W (46.2 cm x 32.7 cm); (frame): 20.25" L x 16.375" W (51.4 cm x 41.6 cm)

Textile panel has not been examined outside of frame. Additional textile material likely folded underneath the right side, but frame is difficult to open. Minor staining and fading to colors, with loosening and fraying to some interior and exterior fibers, and light creasing in some areas. Nice preservation to avian motif. Displayed within modern frame for mounting and display purposes.
