Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A beautiful textile coca bag of rectangular form that is woven from either camelid or cotton fibers in polychrome hues. Several rows or columns or abstract avian creatures adorn the bag in yellow, white, and green hues on a red ground, each with 1 wing arched over the top of their massive heads and petite beaks. A braided textile strap is bound to the uppermost corners of the bag and allowed for it to be suspended from one's shoulder when not actively in use. Mounted within a modern display frame. Size (textile): 5.1" W x 10.6" H (13 cm x 26.9 cm); (frame): 10.875" W x 18.9" H (27.6 cm x 48 cm)

Coca bag has not been examined outside of display frame; whether coca bag consists of both sides of bag or just one visible side is unknown. Braided suspension strap is possibly not original to the coca bag and appears to be attached with modern fibers. Light fraying and staining to coca bag, otherwise intact and very good. Great preservation to thread colors and avian motif throughout.
