Description
Lt. Frederick F. Kislingbury Documents and Photograph. Kislingbury immigrated to America during the Civil War and joined the 54th NY Infantry where he reenlisted after the war and served under Gen. Custer in Texas during the post-war occupation of that state where he was entrusted with the duty of rebuilding telegraph lines in west Texas . He later commanded a unit of Crow Indian Scouts for the 7th Cavalry in 1873 whom he led in June of 1877 to rebury Custer and his men at at the Little Bighorn Battlefield . The lot includes a tintype photograph of the Lt. and his wife with friend, Charles L. Clark and wife; six page letter by U.S. Army Chaplain, J. M. Macomber, Fort Custer, Montana Territory , Sept. 8, 1884 concerning the Lt's death and his association with one of his Crow Indian scouts, Thomas La Forge; several checks written by him at Helena M.T. and Bismarck D.T inc. one to Gen. W,P. Carland which has also been signed by him (8 checks in all) . The lot also includes typed extracts of his diary which was given to a reporter for Harper's magazine at the turn of the century with interesting content in which he describes his Crow Scout Leforge on one of their scouting expeditions and a battle with Sioux Indians, mentioning a stay at a Blackfoot Camp in pursuit of Sitting Bull (10 pages). 3 pages handwritten 1880s; Handwritten 3 page (both sides) 1884 letter to the LT. from the Post Chaplain U.S.A. G.M. Macomber on his letterhead; 11th U.S. Infantry tribute to the LT; Knights of Pythias 1873 stamped membership; 1883 War Department opinion on letterhead regarding the LT's death. More than 30 items in the lot.
