1760s Account for British Regiment Later Engaged at Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill
[MILITARIA]. John Wilkins, Manuscript Document Signed, Account of Subsistence for 18th Royal Regiment of Foot of Ireland, October-December 1767, October 24, 1767, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 1 p., 7.5" x 9". Expected folds; very good.
The Royal Regiment of Foot of Ireland / Royal Irish Regiment / 18th Regiment of Foot (1684-1922) was based in Ireland for most of the Seven Years’ War, but in July 1767, it arrived in North America and spent the next eight years on garrison duty in Philadelphia and different parts of Illinois. At the beginning of the Revolutionary War, the regiment was in Boston and saw action at Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill. Evacuated to Nova Scotia with the British abandonment of Boston in early 1776, the regiment then returned to England.
John Wilkins (fl. 1748-1775) entered the British army in about 1748. Despite his poor performance at Fort Niagara in the early 1760s, he was allowed to purchase the lieutenant-colonelcy of the 18th Regiment of Foot in 1765. From 1768 to 1771, he was in command of Fort de Chartres in the Illinois Country.
