Description
(1745 - 1803) Revolutionary War naval officer considered the 'Father of the American Navy', he commanded the warship Lexington in 1776, capturing the first British vessel in the war. Later, Barry led volunteers and directed artillery at Trenton. Partly-printed D.S. 'John Barry Capt', 1p. 7 3/4 x 5 in., [n.p., n.d.], certification that the bearer had served upon a vessel under Barry's command and was therefore entitled to a share of 'prize-money' which might accrue to him. Rough margins with an old tape repair on verso causing light toning to Barry's rank only, else very good.
