REVOLUTIONARY WAR SWORD - BUNKER HILL BATTLE 1775

Item Details

Description

Framed British 18th c. sword relic, belonging to English sergeant Henry Hypp of the 43rd Regiment and carried in the Battle of Bunker Hill in Boston on June 17, 1775. He was mortally wounded and later buried in Boston Common. Comes with hand printed provenance from the family stating Hypp also fought at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham aka Battle of Quebec on Oct. 13, 1759 under Gen. Wolfe (incorrectly listed on plaque and one notation as the Battle of Queenston Heights which was actually the first battle of War of 1812). The 20 inch sword is cleanly cut, most likely hacked off during the battle, and the sharkskin grip and handle has some damage with missing pommel. Comes with original leather and gilt metal scabbard (good condition) that is 30 in long, overall 34.5 in. Display frame is 39 x 11 inches. The sword was passed down in the family of the soldier and recently consigned by a descendent on Cape Cod. (NOTE: The Battle of Bunker Hill was considered a victory for the British, however they suffered over 1000 casualties in a force of over 3000. The outnumbered American Colonists suffered about 450 casualties with roughly 2400 men. About 100 commissioned British officers were killed or wounded).
