Description
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Middle Sepik River region, Iatmul peoples, ca. late 19th to 20th century CE; Janaka Province, Wangi peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A set of 2 artifacts from Papua New Guinea. The adze has a wooden handle, a rectangular body, and a gray stone blade wrapped with beige and black fibers. The canoe prow exhibits a V-shaped form and has a highly stylized anthropomorphic face on the front. Faint brown and green pigment adorn the prow. Size (canoe prow): 6.7" W x 28.1" H (17 cm x 71.4 cm); (adze): 19.75" W x 15.625" H (50.2 cm x 39.7 cm)

Adze: Pitting on edge of stone blade filled in with lighter material in several areas. Minor loosening to some rattan fibers and abrasions to handle, otherwise intact and very good. Nice color to rattan fibers and handle. Canoe prow: A couple of small knots missing on chin and one temple as shown. Minor nicks and abrasions to face, shoulder, top, peripheries, and verso, with softening to some finer details, fading and chipping to original pigment, and several stable fissures, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits and pigmentation remains throughout, and thin mossy growth in some areas.
