Mary and George Bloch 伉儷為赫赫有名的收藏家夫婦。George Bloch（1920－2009）出生於維也納工業世家，曾負笈英倫。1938年移居上海並創立公司，專營生產及分銷玩具、鐘錶、家具及電子零件。George 原已熱愛收藏，1969年與 Mary 共結連理後更拓展視野與興趣，倆人攜手蒐集各式珍品，收藏範圍涵蓋日本牙雕漆作、中國陶瓷及工藝品、西方現代畫與雕塑等。賢伉儷走遍世界各地，造訪博物館、參與拍賣會，Mary 也因而獲邀加入威尼斯 Peggy Guggenheim Advisory Board 顧問委員會。
八十年代初期，伉儷開始專注袖珍藝術鼻煙壺的收藏。多年來在顧問 Robert Kleiner、Robert Hall 及 Hugh Moss 的輔佐下，收藏日豐。其藏品出版無數，如《盈寸纖研－瑪麗及佐治伯樂鼻煙壺珍藏》、《A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles: The Mary and George Bloch Collection》等專書。曾於各大博物館及藝廊如香港藝術館、倫敦大英博物館、新加坡國家博物院、耶路撒冷以色列博物館、香港大學美術博物館、北京故宮博物院、蒙特利馬 Musée de la Miniature 等地巡迴列展，奠定其鼻煙壺藝術領域的重要地位。本次編號103－105皆為 Mary and George Bloch 伉儷收藏之精巧玲瓏的掌中珍玩，散發令人眩目的迷人魅力。

白玉質，質地細膩，寶光內蘊，略帶金黃色沁。雕琢為鯰魚造形，圓張的魚嘴為壺口，大眼凸起，嘴邊兩縷長鬚向後飄逸。背部隆起，腹部較平整，整體略呈三角形。背鰭偏向一側，頗具動感，胸鰭和腹鰭對稱貼於魚身。身軀鱗片刻劃整齊清晰，排列規整，尾巴分成數縷向身軀彎折，設計巧妙，頗具裝飾趣味。通體雕琢工藝精緻，掏膛規整，鯰魚姿態生動，維妙維肖，盈手把玩頗為雅逸。
鼻煙壺，隨著明末清初歐洲鼻煙傳入中國而產生，始於明末，盛於清，集書畫、雕刻、鑲嵌、琢磨等技藝於一身，被譽為「集中國多種工藝之大成的袖珍藝術品」。其材質多樣，形制繁多，除常見的瓶式外，亦有依料而為，或以動物形狀出現，以魚為造形更是深受人們喜愛之題材。如清宮舊藏，北京故宮博物院庋藏清中期〈白玉帶皮金魚形鼻煙壺〉，與本品皆將魚的姿態刻劃生動，極富逸趣，可資參考。
商周時期，便已出現魚之玉器型制，由於魚與「餘」、「玉」諧音，成為富貴有餘、年年有餘、金玉滿堂等吉祥象徵；到唐宋時期，出現佩魚制度，玉魚品種逐漸增多；直至清代，佩魚深受士大夫和文人雅士喜愛，形成一種時尚風氣。清代，玉魚製作盛行，或隨身佩戴，或隨手把玩，更雕為魚形鼻煙壺等，小巧玲瓏，既實用又便於攜帶。
本件白玉鯰魚形鼻煙壺，造形完整飽滿，體態勻稱可愛，且玉質晶瑩溫潤，包漿豐厚，周身紋飾雕刻細膩，於簡中見繁，散發出濃郁藝術氣息。且其傳承有序，陸續為著名鼻煙壺收藏家 Arthur Gadsby、Mary and George Bloch 伉儷收藏，並展覽及出版於香港藝術館、新加坡國家博物院等。Arthur Gadsby 是1960年代初期具開創性和代表性的收藏家，在香港各古董店等地蒐羅並建立一系列高質量收藏，其收藏規模在當時的香港首屈一指，引領鼻煙壺的收藏潮流。
