Fantastic John Hancock Appointment For Captain in Massachusetts Militia.

Partially printed DS, 15.75" x 11.75", boldly signed by Hancock as Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as  "John Hancock” with his bold “Declaration of Independence” style signature. Countersigned by John Avery, with the seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts affixed to the head of the first leaf. Dated September 9, 1790, Hancock appoints Hashia Thomas "Captain of a company in the second reg. second brigade and sixth division of militia in this commonwealth, comprehending the counties of York and Cumberland." 

Hancock's dark signature is boldly featured prominently on this rare document. Expected folds, with repair along separations at the intersection of the horizontal and vertical folds, minor toning, and ink ghosting on the top left side of the document over the seal.

John Hancock (1737-1793) was an American merchant, statesman, and prominent Patriot of the American Revolution. He served as president of the Second Continental Congress and was the first and third Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Hancock is best known for his large, bold and stylish signature on the Declaration of Independence. Today, many refer to one’s signature as their “John Hancock” or “Hancock”.
