Alex Haley Manuscript Notes - The Beginnings of His Iconic Novel, "Roots"
Manuscript notes of Alex Haley on an unfolded pink napkin, 13 x 12 3/4 inches. Recording fragments of an oral family history recounted by an elderly relative (Cousin Georgia) relating to the early generations of the families' enslaved African and African-American ancestors; accounts incorporated in Alex Haley's novel Roots, published in 1976. The notes are matted with an image of Alex Haley.
Alexander Murray Palmer Haley (1921 – 1992) was an American writer and the author of the 1976 book Roots: The Saga of an American Family. ABC adapted the book as a television miniseries of the same name and aired it in 1977 to a record-breaking audience of 130 million viewers. In the United States, the book and miniseries raised public awareness of black American history and inspired a broad interest in genealogy and family history.
