Item Details
Description
North Africa, Morocco, Tamegroute (Tamgrout), Berber culture, ca. 19th century CE. This is a large wheel-thrown pottery bowl that is glazed the characteristic green and yellow-brown shade that the village of Tamegroute is renowned for. The bowl rests on a pedestal foot, the broad shoulders rise upward to a thick rim that is subtly scalloped. The interior is engraved with wavy patterns and linear registers that encircle the sides, and the surface is glazed in a thick green-brown with areas of a lighter yellow hue. When fired, the pottery pieces are stacked inside each other -the pitting and scars throughout occur during the firing and when the pieces are taken out of the oven. The green results from the copper and magnesium in the clay and glaze, a special recipe that has been used by Berber artisans for generations and has yet to be perfectly replicated outside of Tamegroute. Size: 17" Diameter x 4.75" H (43.2 cm x 12.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998
