Item Details
Description
Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, United States or Canada, Tlingit or Haida people, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A fantastic collection of 3 marine mammal bone pendant charms in the form of totemic animals, 2 orcas (killer whales) and a sea lion or other predatory sea creature. Each is carved in the classic formline style with ovoid and curvilinear shapes that are iconic to Pacific Northwest cultures. The fins of the orcas and the neck are of the sea lion are pierced for suspension as protective pendants. The orca is also known as the "Lord of the Ocean" who serves as guardian of the seas, and the Haida believe that these whales are related to humans, and that when a human drowns, they are transformed into an orca. Size (large orca): 1.75" L x 1.375" W (4.4 cm x 3.5 cm)
