Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $300**

Native America, Pacific Northwest Coast, Tlingit or Haida, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a beautiful hair comb hand carved from mountain goat or sheep horn with a zoomorphic handle inlaid with abalone shells. The tines support a seated animal in profile, likely a bear, the eyes and limbs inlaid with ovoid nacre shells. The verso is slightly curved and uncarved. Combs were used for pulling hair back and pinning in place as ornaments, imbued with power from the symbolic totem animals carved into the surface. The difficulty acquiring the traditional horn type needed has made these types of combs precious and harder to come by in more recent times. Size: 3.125" L x 1.25" W (7.9 cm x 3.2 cm)

Provenance: private Brevard, North Carolina, USA collection
