Description

Glen Pollard (Haida, British Columbia, Canada, 1957 to present), ca. 20th to 21st century CE, "Raven & Bear." This is a beautiful hand carved argillite stone sculpture in the form of a raven crouching over a long base incised with a bear. The base underside is inscribed with the artist's name. Glen Pollard is a First Nations artist and part of the Haida Gwaii village on Tanu Islands. He began carving as teenager in the 1970s and is mostly self-taught. He is an argillite master carver, usually collecting the stone himself. The raven rests with his wings outstretched and his head pointed to one side. The bear and raven's eyes are both inlaid with white abalone shells. Argillite is a fine-grained sedimentary rock that is typically black in color and lustrous once polished; it often has an impressively smooth appearance. In the 19th century, the Haida people began to carve this material as a trade good for visiting Europeans and Americans, because of the decline of their traditional economic practice of fishing. Intact and very good. Minor surface wear and scuffs, including a nick to the raven's beak and abrasion to left upper side of base. Signature on base is legible.
