Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, United States, Tlingit / Haida / Tsimshian, ca. early 20th century CE. A hardwood headdress in the form of a sculpin fish, hand-carved from yew or alder, the eyes and snout inlaid with abalone shells. Some sculpin species have large spines and distinctive dorsal fins, hence the "horns" on this carving, and these fish were believed to have supernatural powers and were used as family and clan crests along the Pacific Northwest Coast. Sculpin are ocean bottom dwellers- scouring the floor for food - they became associated with finders of treasure such as copper, and with Komokwa, the mythical underwater ruler. This is a rare and superb example that may have been worn during ceremonial dances or potlatches.
