Description
Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Inuit, ca. 19th century CE. A collection of 7 protective amulets and charms made from marine mammal bone, walrus tusk ivory, and caribou antler. The 5 bone charms are pierced for suspension of a cord, incised with linear and stippled motifs- 3 are vaguely shaped like an animal paw. The ivory bird charm is incised and stippled to highlight the wings and tail, the head pierced through the eye. The final amulet is a curious item, carved from caribou antler or bone into a tooth shaped piece with incised linear marks and notches along the base. These amulets and charms aided in hunting and the health of the wearer, imbuing power from the animal material used and the symbolic carvings or effigy shapes. Size (tooth shaped amulet): 1.25" L x 1.125" W (3.2 cm x 2.9 cm)
