Native American, Inuit, Northern Canada, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. Signed "E6-225" on base. A charming soapstone bust of an Inuit, skillfully hand-carved to display an ovoid head enveloped in a thick hood and supported by sloped shoulders. The minimalist visage features crescent-form eyes, a rectangular nose, and an incised mouth. The base of the figure is inscribed "E6-225," likely indicating the disc number or ujamiit - identification numbers issued for the Inuit by the Canadian government in lieu of surnames - of the artist. Size: 1.5" W x 2.5" H (3.8 cm x 6.4 cm)
Provenance: ex-private collection of actor Anthony Quinn and his wife Katherine, Bristol, Rhode Island, USA acquired prior to 2000
