Northwest Coast, Inuit, Canada or Alaska, ca. 2nd half 20th century CE; signed by Alex Akeya (Inuit, 1928 - 2011). Nice carving featuring a Native hiding behind an ice wall confronting a mother polar bear and one of its cubs. The Native holds a club in his hands and braces for the attack that seems that it is coming. The scene takes place on a fossilized section of ivory, probably walrus, possibly mammoth but cannot see the Schreger lines to be certain. Work is signed on base - "Alex Akeya". Size: 9.75" L x 2.375" W (24.8 cm x 6 cm)
