Description
Frank Ellanna (Native American, Inupiat, b. 1907) "Nalukataq" n.d. Signed. A carved walrus tusk ivory statue of a cheerful group of people in parkas participating in a blanket toss (nalukataq), similar to a trampoline, holding the skin taut for the blanket jumper. The figures are carved separately and attached to the base with wires, and the blanket panel is held in place by sinew. The Nalukataq festival, named after the blanket toss event, is an annual celebration among the Inupiat people of Alaska, to honor successful whale hunting and community. Size: 6.75" L x 3" W x 4.25" H (17.1 cm x 7.6 cm x 10.8 cm)

Signed on front, and number marked on base. Stable pressure fissure to the ivory base verso, and small crack on blanket panel, but otherwise intact.
