Item Details
Description
14th-15th century A.D. A large East European foliate spearhead, socketted, with a thick circular ring around the socket, supporting a squared hook for the attachment of a flag or streamer. See Nicolle, D., Arms and Armour of the Crusading Era, 1050-1350, vol. II, London, 1999, figs. 103b-103c, for comparable iconography; see the private collection of Mr. Vatev exhibited at the Plovdiv Museum, Bulgaria (inv. STA42773). 485 grams, 34.7 cm (13 3/4 in.) Property of a London businessman, from his grandfather's collection formed after World War II; thence by descent 1972. Such spears were used by the Balkan armies from the 14th century onwards, developing from previous models having a longer iron shaft. They were intended for the attachment of small streamers or flags, according to the 14th century Manasse codex. [No Reserve]
