Description
ROBERT DIGHTON, Attributed. “An Officer of the 10th Light Dragoons”, c. 1805. Watercolor on paper, 13 x 10 ¾ inches, within glazed, carved and gilded frame. Not examined out of the frame. 16 x 13 ¼ in. overall. Robert Dighton, RA (1752-1814) was an English portrait painter, printmaker and caricaturist. In awkward poses and with ruddy faces, Dighton's satirical single studies of society types in caricature included lawyers, military officers, actors and actresses of note, as well as down-at-heel types. In 1805, he executed a large series of cavalry officer “dandies” and “bucks”, many of which were acquired by the Prince of Wales and are now in the Royal Collection. However, he also did watercolor, full figure studies of a more realistic nature which appear to have been uniform studies as much as portraits, such as this watercolor.
