Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, near Roosevelt Lake, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), Tularosa type, ca. 875 to 1050 CE. A wonderful pottery pitcher with a bulbous body, a slender neck, and a flared rim, all sitting upon a round yet stable base. A petite handle in the form of a canine head projects from the neck, just below the rim, while the exterior is adorned with black-on-white geometric decoration featuring triangular, zigzag, and steppe motifs. Pottery played an important role in Anasazi culture and included both utilitarian and decorative pieces that could be traded with neighboring communities for food or other goods. Anasazi pottery was made by hand coiling clay, then smoothing the surface and painting with designs before firing. Size: 4.8" Diameter x 4.5" H (12.2 cm x 11.4 cm)
